1. Model good reading habits for your child. Set aside time where your whole family reads. Talk about your reading life with your child including your favorite books as a child and your favorite genres.
2.Travel to the library together. Help your child pick out books that are interesting to them, and look for books on their “just right” level. (Use the book wizard link from scholastic to help you find books on their reading level)
3.Form a book club and talk with your child about the book. Get 2 copies of a book from the library and read alongside your child, so you know what is going on in the book and you can ask your child important inferential and critical thinking questions. Encourage them to support their answers with evidence from the text.
4. Start a library for your child at home. Find a shelf or area for your child’s books and give them books as gifts on special occasions. Read through some of the book together.
5. Ask your child to retell what s/he has read. Listen for important characteristics of a good retelling: · uses character names (characters) · tells where the story takes place (setting) · includes important parts of the story (plot) · uses an interesting voice (fluency) · checks with the book to see if anything was missed (text evidence). · checks with the book to see if he understood everything (comprehension)
6. Make reading fun! Find book series that interest your child, and read them aloud to your child, so they can appreciate the joy of reading a good book.
